Give Yo' Self: 2012 Edition

2012 is officially 7 hours 31 minutes and 30 seconds old. I remember when I was a kid I would ask a silly question to pretty much everyone I knew.

Depending on what year and what day it was, I would always ask the age of the year. The question was so dumb, that no one really understood it.

And I would always laugh so hard. I thought I was so clever!

Anyways, I am sitting in InTown Suites Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida. Samantha is on the bed next to me doing a devotional on her iPad.

I am using a wired (it still exists!) "high-speed" Internet connection, trying to listen to my theme song this past year. "God is Able" by Hillsong United and it keeps on skipping, because the connection is sooooooooooooooooooooo slow.

This past year, I have made only handful of blog posts. I will blog at least once a week this new year.

Last night Samantha and I had some great conversation regarding this past year. I actually did most of the listening as she shared her heart, her perspective this past year.

There wasn't much laughing, but mostly tears. The conclusion was that it was one of the toughest years of our lives.

On so many different levels, from suddenly moving to Nashville and adjusting to a new culture, environment, church, ministry... etc.

Every year we normally plan and discuss our goals. This year was different.

Not much planning. More of me listening and getting my soul challenged in ways like it has never been.

Samantha has made the biggest sacrifice and I have the most selfless wife. She is absolutely incredible.

After our conversation and prayer... I had mixed feelings.

1. I never felt so challenged as a man.
2. I never felt so loved by my wife.

My personal goal is that I will not put God first this year. Yeah you read it right, I will NOT put Him first.

My goal is to put Him in the center.

In the center of my everything.
In the center of my marriage.
In the center of every relationship that I have.
In the center of every aspect in my life.

I think this past year I tried to put Him first, and I failed in so many areas. I did not purposely fail, but I think I was a lot like Martha this year (read Luke 10:38-42).

With so many changes that was going on, and being stretched in ways I have never had to experience before, I tried to do, and do, and do, and strive... and if I am being really honest, I got in the disease of trying to please others and not God alone.

Now don't get me wrong, this year has also been amazing. We love Nashville, I love what I do, and my marriage is the strongest it has ever been.

I look forward to this upcoming year. New experiences, new challenges, new everything.

The busier I get, the more I need God. The more I need to spend with Him.

This year, by the grace of God, I will be more like Mary. Sit at the feet of Jesus.

Resting, trusting, and worshipping Him like I have never before.

I want to give all of myself to Him in 2012!

Tebowing All Day!

I have been on a blogging hiatus and felt moved to blog. So here is my two cents on "Tebowing."

But before I get into Tebowing, I have to give a shout out to the plankers out there. When planking came on the scene, I wasn't a huge fan.

I thought it was dumb, and it just gave people an excuse do something to get attention and try to be cool. Then I asked myself "Why am I not a fan?"

I had to search my heart and what I discovered it was PRIDE. My biggest adversary.

So without going into exhausting detail, I mustered enough courage to do my first plank.

Then came owling. My wife and I's personal favorite. For some reason, I just think it's hilarious.

Then coning... hmmmm. I have searched my heart about this one, but I still came to the conclusion, not a huge fan.

Now it's Tebowing. I personally think it's just great.

I know many people out there to mock Tim Tebow. But I love the attention it is getting, whether positive or negative.

Why? One of the things I respect about Tebow is that he carries Romans 1:16 on his sleeve, but more importantly in his heart.

I admire his courage. He never forgets to give God glory in everything he does.

Even when he interviews, it's not the cliched "I wanna thank God" speech. You can tell it's sincere, countless times I have heard him say I wanna give glory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

It's real... it's authentic. I am drawn to authenticity.

My prayer first for Tebow. That he will continue to proclaim the name of Jesus Christ with boldness. I cover him with my prayers, that God would protect him and his testimony.

But my other hope and prayer is that while most are mocking Tebow, which is so biblical by the way if you consider yourself as a follower of Christ. If they persecute and mocked Jesus, they will do you as well.

It comes with the territory, it's part of the job description: John 15:18-25.

But my hope is that someone would wonder about Tebowing and do some research on who Tim Tebow is and why he does what he does. And they too would be drawn to the Gospel.

The greatest message and the most important message anyone could ever hear.

So with that said, I'm sure it won't be long until there is another trend, but until then happy "tebowing" to all of you out there. I haven't yet done my first
"tebow". But I'm sure it won't be long....

Finished our first series

We finished our last topic on our first series called S.T.A.R.T. I knew all the students were at different places of each of their walks with the Lord. Many have had different religious and theological backgrounds. I felt it was important to get off to the right start as we began Rush Franklin youth group.

Here is a recap of our topics.

S. Stop trusting in yourself and your own good works and start trusting in Christ alone for Salvation.
T. Turn away from everything the bible calls sin.
A. Attend a weekly gathering for personal and group discipleship.
R. Read and Obey your Bible.
T. Tell others about your faith in Christ.

Our final topic was about telling others about our faith in Christ. A few verses that I shared was.

Romans 1:16, I am not ashamed of the Gospel, for it is the power of God that brings salvation to those who believe.

I also mentioned I believe it was a heart issue. Does Jesus really rule and reign in our hearts. Because if so, I believe we should be actively sharing our faith. It should be a part of our life. I believe as believers we should anticipate opportunities to share Christ. Not being obnoxious about it, but we should always be prepared for an answer of why we live the our lives the way we do.

I then asked 5 of our students to share a quick 1 minute testimony of what Christ was doing in their lives right now.

I was so encouraged to see the realness of each one of their faiths.

Rush 3rd Week.

Another solid night last night at RUSH. Learning and growing so much. Really excited about seeing God build this and the relationships that students are going to have.

It was pretty cold outside so we stayed inside. We had some McDonald's for everyone.

We were in 2nd week of our S.T.A.R.T series. The main point was that as believers we must Turn away from the what the Bible calls sin.

But before I got into the word, I asked Moriah Ongoy if she could share her testimony. She is one of our faithful leaders who is doing an amazing job with the girls. It was so powerful and her story resinated with everyone.

Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness. 2 Timothy 2:19.

I challenged everyone who is a confessing Christian that we must turn away from sin. I said it is impossible for God's spirit to live inside of us and tolerate sin. Not saying that we will never fall into sin, but actively engage in it without a repentant heart. I just said we should all examine our hearts.

After 3 weeks, 3 things that I am learning that is important and that I need to work on.

1. Excellence- We must always be prepared and be detail oriented. A great way to communicate that they matter is if we are well prepared.

2. Challenging-I believe the students want to be challenged in a loving way.

3. Simple-Keep it clear, and simple.

Campus Harvest 2011

Change the Campus, Change the World.

This was the first year that I have ever been to Campus Harvest. I really had no expectations and when I finally found out I was going, I got pretty excited!

Reuniting with my friends I met in the Philippines-Ron and Pastor Dan Monterde.

With Jorel, another friend from the Philippines currently studying at Berkley School of Music. Jorel was part of our worship team in Manila.

Friends from Eastern Carolina football team. So fired up about what God is going to do in and through them.

I had the most amazing time and God gave me a vision while I was there.

Over 2,000 college students from all across North America came together for one Person.

Transformation!

The theme of the conference was Transform.

Some highlights:

Worship. Jon Owens and the team did an amazing job ushering us into God's presence.

Arts. There was a young lady who did spoken word. She was awesome and she did, like, 3 of them. Also D.O.C. performed. They were a step team. I believe it stands for Disciples of Christ.

Testimonies. There were a lot of testimonies that were shared. I always love hearing people's stories how Jesus changed their life.

Word. All the speakers were excellent and all the messages were encouraging and challenging.

Salvation. My favorite part was just seeing all the people who gave their lives to Christ. It was a very emotional weekend.

During the conference, I immediately thought how we need to do this for high school and junior high students. I get fired up thinking about it.

S.T.A.R.T. (Week 1)

Had another great night as RUSH ushered in its second service on March 20th. We started our series called S.T.A.R.T.

I am really excited about this series. I believe it's important as Rush Franklin that we get off to the right start and begin building on the right foundations.

S.T.A.R.T is an acrostic of important foundations that I believe are necessary as we begin our journey with God.

S - Stop trusting in your own good works and start trusting in Christ alone for salvation.

This was the main point of the message. Our scripture verse was found in Ephesians 2:8-10 where the Apostle Paul was stressed that we are saved by God's grace not by works.

"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."

PERFORM - In life we feel as we have to perform. Obviously in the real world there we need to perform. In the work place we need to perform.

In school we need to perform in order to graduate and get into a good college. So don't get me wrong when I say in some things it's necessary that we need to perform.

Because if we don't, you just might hear the words of Donald Trump, YOU'RE FIRED!

BUT ... there are some things were I feel that it's not fair and this is where I feel that as Christians we are at a disadvantage. God will never fire us.

I remember as a child playing sports. I would always rate my performance on my stats.

And it didn't help that some of the questions that are always asked after a game are:

Did you guys win?

How many points did you score?

How did you score on that test?

What is your GPA?

It's ingrained in our brains that our success is determined on how we performed. I remember always having to stretch the truth, to get the approval of my friends.

I always padded my stats a little so that they could be more impressed with me.

THE PROBLEM -- We bring the same attitude into our relationship with God. We feel as if we need to perform for Him.

When we mess up we feel as if we need to do more religious duties to make up for it. We fall into this trap, and this cycle of always feeling inadequate and most of all, a failure.

Apart from the grace of God I have no idea where I would be. There are numerous times I should have been killed and should have died and miraculously He would save me.

Countless times I fell asleep at the wheel while I was driving, getting ready to run into a pole, median, ditch, and deer and all of a sudden I would wake up because I heard a loud scream or a loud horn honking. At the nick-of-time I would swerve and at the last minute. To find out there were no cars out and no one was around.

Those are life or death moments where the grace of God has saved me. Not to mention all the countless times I fall short and His grace covers my sin.

It always starts with God's grace. Then we receive the free gift of salvation and His grace by faith. And good works are a result of those. Many times we get it backwards.

Let me look at the three D's again and how each was present in last Sunday's service.

Devotion: Christ was exalted
Diversity: We are getting more and more diversed
Discipleship: Small group discussion was great.

Prayer: Had an awesome time in prayer before the service.

Food and Fun: Thanks to Jet's Pizza again for hooking us up with a great deal. Frisbees and footballs are always a hit. A young man brought his guitar as well.

2 Truths and a Lie: This was a great game that we got to know a little more about the students that was there.

What was my "2 truths and a lie?": I cried in Free Willy, I cried in Remember the Titans, and I cried in the Passion of the Christ.

To everyones surprise me not crying in the Passion threw people a curve ball. To be honest I was too upset to cry, and it was before I really surrendered my life to the Lord.

Then I shared the Word and broke up into small groups right after.

In two weeks, I am learning so much. One of the biggest things that I feel I need to do a better job is knowing how to manage my volunteers and doing a better job in managing time.

It's such a learning process, and I am being stretched and stretched. I know this is only the beginning and that God's grace will get me through and He will build this youth group. Not only in numbers but in depth as well.

RUSH Franklin Launched Its First Youth Service

March 13, 2011 is a very special day.

We launched our very first youth service in Bethel Franklin.

1 Timothy 4:12
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith, and in purity.

This is the verse that I believe the Lord has given me and for RUSH Franklin. To raise up a generation of youth who will be examples in their homes, schools, and every place they set foot.

Human Bingo! Great ice-breaker game that encouraged everyone to engage each other.

There was some youth who I met for the first time so I shared my testimony and explained our core values of Devotion, Diversity, and Discipleship.

We divided ourselves into small discussion groups and prayed.

Things I learned and am grateful for

#1: TEAM

I am so grateful that God surrounds me with amazing people who really make it all happen. It was encouraging to see the people who wanted to help out. Finding the right team is critical and was overwhelmed by the volunteers and leaders there wanting to serve.

#2: LEADERSHIP
God is stretching me and given me a new role of leadership. I know by His grace this will be a success and I will continue to grow as this kind of leader.

#3: CLARIFYING THE WIN

A win for us has to be filtered through our core values:

DEVOTION, DIVERSITY, DISCIPLESHIP

Was Christ exalted and was He the hero tonight?

Yes.

Was there diversity?

Yes, we had Hispanic, Indian, Brazilian, Filipino, Black, and White.

As well as some mixed breeds just like me!

Was there a focus on making disciples?

Yes. Had a great small group discussion and prayer. Also, we believe that discipleship is relationship and it was so good to see relationships being established.

I couldn't have asked for a better start. I believe it was because of prayer and only because I could feel the Holy Spirit's presence. To God be the Glory.

RUSH LAUNCH

March 13 is only a couple of days away. We are going to officially launch RUSH Franklin this Sunday evening at 6:00p.m. Which is our High School ministry at Bethel Franklin.

I'm super excited to finally getting it going. It will be exactly 2 months to date since we have been here in Nashville.

I have worked with youth since the beginning of my adult life. I remember when I graduated high school back in 1997, I immediately began working with youth. My heart has always been with working with youth and helping reach their full potential in life. It wasn't until 2004 when I gave my heart to Jesus, that I realized how they could reach the their full-potential. They had to experience and know Truth and Life; John 14:6

For the past 3 years I have been doing youth ministry full-time, but never as a Youth Pastor in a church setting. I volunteered in the Philippines, but never at this capacity.

There is a lot of work that goes into planning a service. I am starting the get an appreciation for what Pastors go through on a weekly basis. But one thing that is for sure, I couldn't be more excited about where I am in my life right now. I know that God has called me here and has given me this position. I know He will fill in the gaps where I lack. I am learning and being stretched like I have never been before.

This is the first time Bethel Franklin has ever had a youth group. I am excited to be a part of something from the very beginning and seeing what God does with it. The good news is the only way we can go is forward :-)

3 Things that I am so excited about with Rush Franklin.

Implementing our core values of: Devotion, Diversity, and Discipleship to our youth.
Relationships: I'm really excited about the people I am working with and the relationships I will be build with the youth.
Growth: I'm excited to grow in my walk with God and see people do the same.

Meeting Jacklyn

I normally wouldn't write about this because I don't want you to ever think I am trying to glorify myself. This is all about the glory of God. I just felt it was worth writing because it's something I believe we all have the struggle with, pre-judging people and not giving people the benefit of the doubt.

On a late Thursday night Samantha and I went to a grocery store. It was really dark out and really cold outside. I dropped Samantha off at the door so she could get out of the cold and parked my car. While I was getting out the car a lady approached me. I asked her name, she said it was "Jacklyn."

She struggled to get some words out of her mouth and asked me, "Can you help me feed my kids?" I could barely understand her because I think she has some sort of neurological disorder that impairs her action and speech. My heart believed her and wanted to bless her, but in my mind I had so many different thoughts running through my head.

I wonder if she is just putting on a good act?
I wonder is she is being pimped and she has someone with her?
I wonder if she really wants to use this money to buy some drugs or alcohol?
I wonder is she is a prostitute?
Maybe she's telling the truth and she just needs help?

I asked her if I could just buy her some groceries instead. She said she wanted to get her two daughters a couple of happy meals from McDonalds and it was tough for her took.

I told her to come inside the store so I could introduce her to Samantha and get her some money. She was asking for $5 or $6 but I only had $3 in my pocket. We emptied out our change gave it to her about $6 and prayed for her. Samantha prayed one of the sweetest prayers I have ever heard.

We decided to just drive her to McDonald's order her some food and bring her home. She began to tell us her story. That her first husband beat her for 3 years and they had one baby girl named Sadie. Her second husband has been in jail for the last 2 years and it's been pretty hard for her. They have a daughter named Sarah.

The moment when I finally really believed her is while we were ordering food. I asked Jacklynn what did she want, and she said nothing she just wanted to make sure her girls got something to eat. We told her that it was okay get something for herself and she humbly ordered a Big Mac :-)

We got to her apartment and little girls was with her sister who lived in the same complex who was getting dressed. After bringing her food inside she came back and gave me a beautiful picture of her and her two little girls.

We wanted to see her girls but since it was already late and cold we told her would come back another day.

Samantha and I drove home thanking and praising God. I knew my heart was right after all. It amazed me that everything that she told me was the truth. I was also thinking what made her come up to a big black guy like me. I was dressed in gym clothes because we just left the gym, and it's not like I look like the most approachable person.

I just believe it was our precious God who was at work who allowed our paths to cross to be blessing in each others life.

I honestly believe God puts so many opportunities everyday to be a blessing in someone else's life. If we take time to ask Him to show us and give us eyes to see people the way He views people.

I was reminded by this verse in scripture of who I think our model should be as Christians.

Matthew 9:36
When Jesus saw the crowds He had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shephard.

Week 1 Recap: Nashville

It's been officially been one week since Samantha and I relocated to Nashville, TN.

The transition has been as smooth as can be. We absolutely love this place.

The people have been so warm and welcoming. We are thrilled to be living here.

It was extremely tough for us to say goodbye to my friends, family, but most importantly, my parents. The last few weeks we were in Nebraska went by so quick and I wasn't able to see a lot of good friends and family before we left.

But once we set course there was no looking back for us.

We found an awesome apartment that is 5 minutes from my office and about 15 minutes to my new church home in Franklin, TN. Samantha and I are really enjoying starting this new season in our lives together.

Along with the adventure of finding a new home, so much has been this week.

It was important for us to get here for this past Sunday service. It was powerful and historic.

The current lead pastor, Rafe Young (who is just fantastic), is going to plant an Every Nation Church in Lexington, Kentucky. Him and beautiful wife Liz are an amazing couple.

So if anyone has heart for Lexington let me know, and I would be sure to get you in contact with them.

Pastor Steve Murrell, is going to take over as the senior pastor of Bethel Franklin, along with Kevin York, and Shino Prater. They announced the news to the congregation. What an exciting time for our Every Nation Family!

First staff meeting for Bethel Franklin was also this week. So excited about the vision of Bethel and being a part of this amazing team.

Theology Training: Dr. Jerry Smith, who is an Anglican Pastor from one of the churches in the area, shared.

Vision Night: They introduced me to the church as the new youth pastor.

But one of the greatest highlights was while we were trying to go home to our apartment. Due to the icy roads my car couldn't make it up the big hill.

Our apartment is tucked away in a neighborhood. So it's about a half a mile to our apartment from the bottom of the hill.

Samantha and I were deciding: (1) whether or not we should call a friend and try to stay there; (2) check into a hotel for a night; (3) or try to soldier it out and walk to the apartment.

We decided to go on the adventure. Because Samantha had heels on, I wouldn't dare allow her to attempt to walk in those things.

So I left her in the car....ran to the apartment......got some shoes and clothes for her......then walked back together to our apartment.

I was so proud of Samantha. It was really cold outside and she was a trooper.

That's how we ended our first week here. Having and absolute blast, we are having the time of our life:-)

Decision Time.

I was a the barber shop yesterday and my barber asked me how do you do it. Make big decisions and just up and leave. Referring in a couple of days getting to go off on another adventure with my wife. We are packing up and moving to Music City: Nashville, TN.

Here is how I made my decision.

Pray/Fast: I really spent a lot of time in prayer. Asking God what is it that He wanted me to do. What was His will for our lives. I heard it once say to never make a major decision without fasting.

Wife: What Samantha felt really was a close second on how I made the decision. I also heard it say, that sometimes God speaks loudest through your wife. I know if it was a major decision like this my wife and I would have to be in 100% agreement. I just feel that's how God works, we are a team. We are either All In our All Out.

Faith: I asked myself what would require more faith and humility. Which one of these decisions would make me the most uncomfortable. Which one of these decisions would I be most dependent on God.

Godly Counsel: I talked to several men who I highly respect and value their opinion. I asked their thoughts and asked them to stand with me in prayer.

Confirmation: While I was visiting Nashville, I spent one early morning and went to the church property and asked the Lord to confirm it in scripture. Once I was there and I just felt God's peace and presence in my heart. I knew that this was what I was supposed to do. Not to mention I saw a family of deer a just enjoying the place too. I love deer and I think it was just a way of God speaking directly to my heart.

God's Word: Last but not least, God will speak through His word. It's not the only way He speaks but it's the most common. I would always advise people to ask God to confirm it in his word.

Please continue to pray for us as we embark on this new adventure. We are excited but I would lying to you if I told I wasn't nervous. It's kind of the same feeling I get before playing a big game. I know I gotta get out there and play but there are definitely butterflies in my stomach.

Reset 1-1-11

1-1-11 a great time for a fresh start. To press the reset button. Right down some New Year's resolutions or faith goals. It's just neat to start over. Even as I am writing right now, I am tempted to start over. So I will tell you how I started the New Year and some of my faith goals this year.

Last night Samantha and I felt like we needed to get together and just have some us time. I took her to one of favorite new restaurants called Ingredient. It was nice and quiet. We shared a delicious pizza. I really like the pizza there they serve it nice and fresh.

Samantha suggested we write to things, our gratitude list of 2010 and faith goals of 2011. We wrote them down and then discussed them. I really enjoy having quality time with some great conversation. It was good reflecting on God's faithfulness and goodness this past year.

Then we went to Waypoint Church. They are having this 24/7 prayer and worship. For 7 straight days there will be people there praying and worshipping God. I highly recommend this to anyone who just wants to detox, maybe read their Bible, do some reflection or whatever. A great and anointed environment for it.

We wanted to make sure we brought in the New Year with my parents. At midnight we shared together what we were grateful for this past year. It really has been a tough but fulfilling year for our family. Especially almost losing my mom to a brain aneurysm.

When midnight struck my dad and I both kissed our brides on the lips:-) I honestly seen them kiss on the lips at most 3 times my entire life. No joke:-) It was cute...

Then we played dominoes together. My parents beat Samantha and I. It was great seeing them enjoy each other. My mom is hilarious every time she scores some points. She would always say "I got you this time" and then my dad would laugh. Because she just learned the game and now she is kicking our butts.

It was getting late and then Samantha and prayed and went to bed. I woke up and went straight to my computer. I must admit I was tempted to check my email and facebook right away. But I didn 't:-) I went to YouTube and played this song "Holy" by Matt Gilman. I have had in on repeat this entire week.

I want to develop a habit that the first thing I do is to Worship, Read/Study God's Word, and Pray. So I did those things and now I am writing. I also want to develop a habit of blogging.

Imagine swimming for 2.4 miles, then biking for 112 miles, and then running a full marathon of 26.2 miles all in one day. INSANITY!!! If you accumulate all the running, biking, and swimming in my life time, maybe. But in one day, I can't even begin to imagine.

My friend Chris Channel is competing in the Ford Iron Man competition today in Tempe, Arizona. Chris has been training for this competition for a long time, and his workout routine is ridiculous. I really believe without the shadow of the doubt that this is the most grueling competition ever. I asked Chris what's the goal? He said "just to finish." They have 17 hours to finish the race and many people will fall short.

Chris called me yesterday and asked to pray for him. He told me that he has a bruised rib but the atmosphere was awesome. He said unlike many other sporting events where you see people sizing each other up, there was nothing but encouragement and support from all the participants. How cool would it be if all sports were like that.

Go Chris, we are praying for you buddy. I know all your loved ones and friends are so proud of you.

Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win! All athletes are disciplined in their training. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize. ~1 Corinthians 9:23,24.

Pastors Appreciation

I will not be half of the man I am today without having men of God who speak into my life. People who take their time out to love, encourage, disciple, and speak into my life. Here are some men who I credit a lot of who I am today. The Bible tells us to Honor and pray for our leaders. Thank you so much to these men and women.

Kevin Deese: Kevin is the first guy that I actually knew who was praying for me. He invited me to church and has always been there. I also meet with him and few other guys on Wednesday mornings. Kevin has one of the biggest hearts I know. I love this man. This is his beautiful family

Alex Compton: This was really the guy who has had the most profound impact on me. God used Him to really disciple me. Share with me scripture and patiently loved and prayed for me. I can't thank this guy enough. He probably is one of the most Christ-like guys I know. Now he is married to Michelle a great friend and woman of God. Their lives are a walking testimony of God's goodness and faithfulness in their lives.

Ty and Terri Schenzel: Pastor Ty and his beautiful wife Terri founded the Hope Center in Omaha, Nebraska. I met Pastor Ty while I as in high school and had no idea he was a pastor. He was just very loving and supportive. When I first gave my life to the Lord, Pastor Ty was preaching. He is one of the busiest guys I know and still always makes time to meet with me. Pastor Ty is an inspiration to everyone he crosses paths with.

Jeff Booth: Pastor Jeff was the worship pastor at a church I used to attend in Omaha. Him and his wife Terri just took over a Freedom Church a couple of months ago. It is now called Freedom Worship Center. They have a beautiful family and I am always so encouraged by them. Pastor Jeff has always been there for me and is full of wisdom and encouragement.

Steve Murrell: When I went first came to the Philippines it was Pastor Steve who took time to reach out to me. He visited with me, invited me to his home and took time out of his hectic schedule to have lunch with me. Encourage and pray for me. Whenever I had some really tough decisions to make, I would ask for his advice and he would graciously point me to scripture and share his wisdom.

Joey Bonifacio: Like Pastor Steve, Pastor Joey always believed in me. I was not even close to being qualified but he hired me on his staff at Victory. I am so blessed to have this man of God in my life. Thank you Pastor Joey for always seeing what I could be and not what I was. I love and appreciate you.

Paolo Punzalan: I have had the privilege of working with Pastor Paolo at the 5 and 7 oclock services at the Victory Fort. There really isn't a better guy in the world to work for. He always takes out time to encourage me and hold me accountable. I absolutely love this man and his wonderful family. I look forward to working with him when I get back.

Carlos Antonio: At the 5 and 7 I also have the privilege of working with Pastor Caloy. He always encourages me and I appreciate him so much. He is married to Belle Antonio and they have to beautiful little girls Bella and Hannah. Thanks for all your love and support.

Rich Blaylock: I have had the great opportunity to help Pastor Rich with That Friday Thing. I am so excited for this guy. I love the way he hungers and thirsts for knowledge and wisdom. I love the way he studies and loves the word of God. Appreciate you Pastor Rich.

Dr. Daniel Chan: He is the senior pastor at Church for the Nations in Walnut, California. I really appreciate this man and his wife Karyn. They have been supporting us for the past 2 years. He has written a couple of books as well.

Pastor RG and Gina Reyes: They also help Pastor Church or the Nations. We admire there child-like faith and their hearts to serve the Lord. Was so inspired on how he and his family handled his kidney transfer and seeing his faith in action. They both have such servant hearts and we are so blessed by them.

Ariel and Rose Untal: Pastor Ariel is the senior Pastor at Every Nation Memphis. We absolutely love this family and admire his work ethic and his commitment to excellence. Thank you so much Pastor Ariel and Ate Rose for all you love and support.

Gary and Laurie Hoyt: Pastor Gary and Laurie are pastors at Bellevue Christian Center. We just love their leadership and for all their love and support. BCC has been supporting us for the past year and we really love their church. We consider their church our home when we are here in Bellevue.

Walter and Melba Hooker: We have had the privilege of spending time with them. We attend their Sunday Journey Group. It's a book study of Staying in Love by Andy Stanly. We appreciate their love for the Lord and their hospitality and encouragement. Pastor Hooker also came to visit my Dad in the hospital when he had surgery. That meant so much to our family.

Dr. Stan Rone: Every time I am around this man I feel so inspired and encouraged. He is so gentle, warm, inviting, and loving. I have known Dr. Stan since I was a young boy and I am so blessed to have him in my life. I learn so much from this man of God.

Dane Tokushige: He is a pastor in Hawaii and has always been in my corner. I love this man and his beautiful wife Liz. I appreciate all the encouragement and always believing in a brotha. You are always my go to man.

Appreciate all of you so much, and taking to time to pour into my life. Truly Iron sharpens Iron and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart.

International House of Prayer.

"these I will bring to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted on my altar; for my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations."

I had such a wonderful time at IHOP in Kansas City on the weekend of November 5th. I felt so encouraged, empowered, and refreshed.

This is a place I highly recommend to anyone who needs to get away, get refreshed, or if you are just in the area. 24 hour prayer and worship.

They rotated worship bands and people can just come and sit, pray, bring there laptops and work, read, do whatever, you just felt so free. God definitely showed up in my time here and began to give me some structure about the vision that he gave me earlier this year. I am so fired up!

One of the coolest things that witnessed was there was a team from Poland that was there. There was like 50 of them. Initially one guy came up and started praying for his nation, first in English but then in his own native language. Then there rest of his team did "rifle prayer" Each one of them had about 15 seconds to pray. They were all lined up, all 50 of them, and they all prayed for their Nation. It was really so powerful.

Here are some things that I learned and will incorporate in my life:

God's presence: there is nothing in this world more precious than being in God's presence. We can access it all the time. It's not confined in a particular building. It's actually all around us, it's in our hearts. We need it, it's there for us if we acknowledge it and seek it.

Prayer: Our faith should be hinged on prayer. I'm not just talking about praying before meals, or in a crisis. It should be incorporated in our lifestyle, all the time. I believe the dreams that God has placed in my heart will continue to birthed from prayer. Prayer is the foundation, prayer is key.

People: I need to constantly surround myself with people who are about God's business. Iron really sharpens Iron and I love surrounding my self with people who are in passionate pursuit of the things of God.

Worship: We can't put worshiping God in a box. People have there own styles or ways of connecting with God. Some sing, some dance, some draw, some be still, some play instruments, some play sports. We Worship God when we use the gifts and talents that He gives us to Honor and Glorify Him. Worship just like prayer is lifestyle.

I believe the reason why that place was so special was because without a doubt I could feel God's presence. I believe because it is a place where He is being lifted up in prayer and in worship. Some of us will never get to Kansas City and go to an IHOP. But one thing we can all do is offer our homes, work, lives as a House of Prayer. We can all pray, we can all worship God. Let our lives reflect His glory.

My two cents on Halloween

So Halloween is coming is today. Samantha and I have had our share of conversations whether or not we will participate in this day. As a kid I just really enjoyed Halloween. Going out with friends and collecting a sleeping bag full of candy. Nerds and Candy Bars were my favorite. Candy-Corns and Good N' Plenty, not so much:-)

I enjoyed going to Haunted Houses, there was no place like Mystery Manor a popular place here in Omaha.
I didn't go around doing witchcraft, I didn't get involved with spirits and all that spooky stuff. It was all for fun and excitement.

Being a Christian and understanding a little bit about the origin of Halloween I now have to make a decision. Thanks to wikipedia I have a little better understanding on the history and origin of the holiday. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halloween.

I totally respect those who refuse to celebrate Halloween and have their own Christian version of it, whether at a church or some-type of festival. I also respect those who decide to celebrate it. I don't think you get kudos from God and bonus points in Heaven for not celebrating it, and don't feel you will be condemned if you do. It comes down to your personal convictions.

No, I am not oblivious to what some do on that day. People shoot guns in the air, people go around stealing other kids candy, people worshipping Satan.

Some guys use the day as an excuse to act a little bit tougher and crazy, some girls use it as an excuse to dress a little more provacative. And that's ok if that's what you choose to do.

As for us, Samantha and I, we will be dressing up, carving pumpkins, and handing out candy to the kids if we get back from the Harvest Celebration at church in time. Our front porch light will be on and will welcome trick-or-treaters. And handing out Candy-Corns and Good N' Plenty....just kidding:-)

Have a wonderful day on however you decide to celebrate it. Let's all be wise and use good judgement. Parents let's educate our kids on the holiday and use good judgement as well.

Pride, Pride, Go Away...

In 2004, I reached a point in my journey walking with the Lord for 4 years feeling extremely lost, insecure, and hopeless. Yes I was living out a childhood dream of mine, but I knew in my heart that I haven't fully surrendered my life to the Lord. I was not happy with the person I had become and I cried out to the Lord asking Him to reveal what it was for me that was keeping me from totally surrendering everything to him.

He answered and it was the most liberating thing for me. I finally understood myself a little bit better and realized that I was one of the most proud, self-centered, and self-righteous person I have ever met. It was a tough thing for me to swallow, because I thought I was being a pretty good guy and doing a lot of my "Christian duties."

I can still remember to this day, it was my life was like a puzzle and the pieces of the puzzle were coming together and it made sense. My childhood came to life, certain decisions that I made, and seeing God's grace and mercy over my life brought me to a place of awe and amazement. But the thing that was even more amazing was the fact that despite all the things that I did, He chose to love me anyways.

Now that I am aware of my pride and believe me, I still have a lot of it. It is a cancer in my heart that I need the Lord to remove. So here are some verses that I try and pray over my life every day. Notice I say try...

James 4:10-Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

James 4:6~ The lord opposes the proud, but he gives grace to the humble.

Philippians 2:13 “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.”

My prayer for all of us, is that our pride will not get in the way of us experience all that God wants us to experience. Pride can be really sneaky, many people know they have it, but most don't realize they do. Lord help us...

Zachary Wilcher

(This is our family a few months at the airport before Samantha and I left for the Philippines. Zachary is the one with the blue shirt:-)

If you saw Zachary for the first time you would think he is a super normal kid. He loves to play sports, run, and he is quite the jokester. He is super smart and is very thoughtful and considerate. Only when you see him with his shirt off where you see his scars, or his war wounds as I call it.

He has a twin brother named Xavier who is a little bit bigger and older by a few minutes. Zachary is very protective of all his siblings and definitely is a Momma's boy. He is definately a leader.

When Xavier and Zachary were born they were both born with holes in their hearts. I am not quite sure of what the medical term is. They both had to have surgery but Xavier's body responded a better. He has pretty much fully recovered and is able to play full contact sport. Football is his passion.

Zachary on the other hand had to have several open heart surgeries and didn't recover as well as his older brother. Zachary too loves sports and loves his football but is unable to play full-contact due to his condition.

They both are quite the athletes and they love to run. I really believe it is a gift that God has given them both.

Zachary is due for a replacement in his stent that is in his heart because of his age. He had to undergo surgery this past Friday. Due to the complexity of the procedure the family drove to Miami to see the nations best heart doctor. They currently live in Jacksonville.

The surgery was long and real tedious. Because Zachary has small arteries, it was extremely difficult to place the new stent. His poor little heart tore and the doctors haven't been able to stop the bleeding.

We are praying for God to move miraculously like I know He can. I believe that he created man, and that He is the ultimate healer. We are believing that on little Zachary's report it will say Act of God and the doctors won't be able to explain what happened.

Thank you all for your prayers and please continue to stand with our family. We love you and appreciate you more than you know.

Catalyst East 2010: Gayle Haggard

Catalyst Conference was awesome. I highly recommend this to any and everyone. I had never heard her side of the story of why she decided to stay with her husband. So to me it was so fresh and was one of the stories that really spoke volumes to me.

Gayle Haggard. I wasn't supposed to go to her session but I decided to be a good husband and stay with my wife all the sessions. It ended up being the best idea. She truly models and lives a grace filled life. This woman knows who she is in Christ. I am sure you have heard the scandal that happened with her husband Ted Haggard. She told everyone why she decided to stay.

She shared that things were going great with her marriage. and then the shocking news. She did say she was shocked at the nature of Ted's sin, but not that he sinned.

Moment of Decision: After breaking the news and talking to each other about it, obviously they were both filled with so much emotion. She said her moment of decision was when they were lying in bed and Ted reached out his hand to see if she was still there. At the moment she felt that was her opportunity that was her moment. She held Ted's hand. "I wanted to communicate with him that I was there for him."

"When we are up against difficult times, that is the time our faith is tested." she also quotes.

Mrs. Haggard also mentioned that it was a relief to their children. Because they realized that their parents weren't perfect and that they had their own struggles too. It actually brought the family closer.

"Once you settle within yourself your relationship with God. Grace and forgiveness go hand in hand."

"I was determined to fight for my marriage, I was determined to fight for my husband."

Gail Haggard "I am not going to divorce you Ted Haggard, I am committed to you. I love you."

I felt so encouraged hearing Gayle's story and how she modeled what forgiveness and grace looks like in Scripture. I am so glad she stuck it out.

Honestly, I don't think her husband deserves a wife like her. But I also know I don't deserve as wife like Samantha

But what blows me away even more is as Christians are called the bride of Christ, and I definitely don't deserve that as well. God is rich in mercy, grace, and forgiveness. Let's extend that to our brothers and sisters as well.

31 and Dreaming...

31 and Dreaming! I pray that if I reach one hundred years old, I will still be dreaming. I believe that most of us have dreams and most of our dreams have to do with helping people or changing the world. We want our lives to count and make a difference. We want to leave a positive lasting legacy.

I remember as a young kid maybe around 9 or10 years old. I had dreams of becoming the first ever 3 sport professional athlete. I felt if Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders can play in the NFL and MLB, I should be able to do the same and add the NBA. I had dreams of becoming rich and famous somehow making My Mom and Dad proud.

I graduated high school or should I say survived it at the age of seventeen in 1997, from Bellevue West High School in Bellevue Nebraska. (Go T-Birds!!!). My dreams became less ambitious and just wanted to go to college and make something out of my life. I still had dreams of being a professional athlete, but I knew my first step was just getting through college. I remember clearly my dad telling me that all he wanted dreamed of me was to become a responsible citizen. He didn't care if I accomplished my dreams. That really stuck with me. He knew better and he saw my immaturity.

In 2001 I graduated from college. I then had some direction and knew I was going to go to the Philippines to play professional basketball. I matured a little bit from high school, and now I wanted to make a difference, I wanted to change the world. I had dreams of being an athletic superstar, starting foundations, being a part of change in the Philippines.

In 2004 I was playing professional basketball and had an encounter with the love of Jesus Christ and the Gospel impacted my life in a way I have never felt before. I surrendered my hopes, dreams, talents, desires, but most importantly my life to Jesus. I knew I was a confessing Christian but I also knew that I have never submitted to His authority in my life. Matthew 7:21, Not everyone who call out to me 'Lord! Lord!' will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. stayed real close to my heart.

I felt like because I was pretty good guy and I sinned less than most I was about a 99% sinner. Then, I encountered the Truth and I realized I was 100% guilty from sinning against a holy and righteous God and I was in desperate need of a savior. The thing that amazed me, is when I realized that I was 100% guilty, yet God still loved me anyways. He always loved me, He always will and that idea, that thought, that truth changed me.

I finally gave up trying to do it my own selfish way and realized I was still even more selfish and self absorbed. I realized that I was the hero in every dream I wanted to accomplish. Although I was doing it in Jesus name, I wanted to get all the glory of everything. It was all about ME, MY PRIDE MY EGO.

Now at 31 I still have dreams. Here are a few.

1. Start a Sports Academy in the Philippines. This is so close to my heart and thinking about it gets me so excited. I envision a school for athletes with amazing teachers, coaches, and mentors who will help student athletes reach their full potential as a student, athlete, but more importantly in life. I also envision starting a foundation that will help fund and give scholarships that will help those less fortunate to join the academy. Dream Foundation sounds good, You have a dream, I want to help your dream become a reality. Or should I say We, because it's going to take a team of like-minded people.

2. Write and publish a book. I have thought about this for the last 10 years. I started but never really got anywhere.

3. Have children. Samantha and I want to have our own children and we also want to adopt. We are believing that God will provide.

These are just the first 3 dreams that come in mind. Now my prayer is that I don't want a single ounce of Glory. Everything part of my dreams I want Him to get it all. And until my heart and motives are pure, I pray that God will not allow these dreams to come to past. I know how proud and selfish I still am and I will patiently wait and serve him until they come true. If they don't come true, I still choose to serve Him anyways.

Jesus I love with all my heart, but more importantly you love me with all of your heart. Thank you for giving me an abundant life at 31 years old now. I want my life to reflect you and bring you glory. Every thought, every text, every blog post, every relationship, every thing, every dream...As David wrote in Psalm 55:10 create in me a pure heart O God, renew a loyal spirit within me....that too is my prayer.

31 Things I am grateful for this past year....rough draft

I can't believe tomorrow I will turn 31 years old. I know coming into my thirties that this was going to be a real special decade for me. I truly believe that everything that I have experienced in my life is preparing me for a time such as this. God has given my life purpose and vision Now is the time, and I am so grateful to be walking in and into my destiny.

Thank you for all the birthday greetings, prayers, support, friendship, encouragement, patience, and just being a part of my life.

1. God the Father ( I am enjoying being His son. I am starting to learn and understand more and more what it truly means a child of God.

2. Holy Spirit- Thank you for always guiding me and reminding me that I truly am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Thank you for your patience, power, and protection. I want to experience you in a deeper way.

3. Jesus Christ, I am constantly learning and am really fascinated on how wide, deep, is His love for me. A part from Him, I truly am a self-centered, insecure, impatient, judgemental, proud person.

4. Samantha Johnson, For those of you know who really know Samantha, you know that she is the so giving, selfless, hard working, thoughtful , motherly, and compassionate. She truly inspires me and she really is my best friend. Thank you for always supporting me, encouraging me, affirming me,surprising me, and loving Jesus the way that you do. Everything about you inspires me. I love you so much!

5. Ronnie and Linda Johnson-This year has been a roller coaster for our family. My mother had to undergo two brain surgeries, due to an aneurism, and my father had his second hip replacement. I have spent so much time in the hospitals this year. I am grateful that they are both doing so great and recovering so well. They are also two fo the greatest parents that anyone could ever have. I truly am blessed to have them as my parents.

6. Family-This was also the first time that all of our immediate family, cousins, nieces, nephews and grandkids got together. We don't really have a big family and it was so good for us all to be together.

7. Friends-I am so grateful and I appreciate my friendships that I have built over the past years. There are friends that have been with me from the beginning, and new friends that God graciously put its in my life. Thank you for all your love, support, encouragement, sharpening, inspiration, and being available. I love you all.

8. Spiritual Family- I am grateful to be a part of a wonderful spiritual family. Thank all of you for supporting, loving, inspiring, sharpening, praying, and encouraging me to be a man. A real man...

9. Weddings, I have been a part of 5 beautiful weddings on one more in a few weeks. Gabe and Diane, Sam and Megan Wright, Alex and Michelle Compton, Jimmy and Lj Alapag, Danny and Kellie Hoyt, and in two weeks Dan and Carolina Cawl. I absolutely love weddings. ( Not to mention I officiated my first one with Jimmy and Lj)

10. Children, Many of our close friends had kids. Kids are absolutely adorable. Samantha and I are looking forward to be parents someday. We want at least 2 kids of our own, and want to adopt 2 more.

11. I lost 40 pounds! About this time last year I was about 40 pounds lighter, the thing is I put on all the weight back. I do know that with focus and discipline I can get back down.

12. A vision: A vision from God is priceless, I remember the beginning of this year I felt God give me a vision for my life. I was overwhelmed with emotion and it took me 16 pages and countless hours to write it out.

13. Open Doors: Last year was really the first year for me as a "Missionary" wasn't really sure what I was going to be doing. Just seeing God's faithfulness and opening up doors for ministry has been truly humbling.

14. My Walk with God- I know my relationship has gone deeper. I understand scripture a little bit better, and it really gets better and better.

15. New Friendships: I truly believe that God divinely places people in your life. Some acquaintences, but some life-long, deep lasting friendships. There have been so many this year and again I am humbled and grateful.

16. My Mom: My mom had a 1/3 chance of living, and a 1/3 chance of having some problems after her surgery. Seeing her fully recover is truly a miracle. I can't thank all the people who prayed, visited, and just was there for my family enough.

17. My Golf Game. I was able to play more golf this year then probably since high school. I have brought down my handicap and excited to play competitive golf again.

18. Reunion: This year I had reunions with old friends I haven't seen in years. Especially some old high school friends and the Freestyle fam. It's so good to be able to spend time and see how your friends are doing.

19. Facebook: Some people hate it, but I love it. Facebook has been great for me to be able to keep in touch with old friends and even for ministry. I can't count the number who randomly send me a private message and ask for prayer, advice, or just need someone to vent out to.

20. Hoop-it-up: I really had such a great time playing ball with Sam, Brian, and Josh. It was a good excuse to get together and it ended up as a memory that we will never forget.

21. Quality Time: I was able to spend a lot of quality time with people who are really close to me. Especially my Dad, Mom, and Samantha.

22. Bellevue Christian Center: One of the things that we were praying about was that God would get us connected to a good church while in the states. We have found a home at B.C.C.

23. Zack: My adopted lil brother Zack got into Impact Basketball Academy in Las Vegas. It is one of the worlds premiere basketball academies. He is the first Asian to enroll at the school.

24. Being used by God: It really is humbling that God would allow me to be used by Him to minister, encourage, share the Gospel, listen, give a hug, or just to be available. I can't count how many times it just seemed like I was at the right place at the right time...Coincidence??? I think not:-)

25. Alex and Michelle's Wedding: Like I mentioned I absolutely love weddings. But this wedding was one where the presence of God was so thick. Everything about it honored God and it was awesome to be a part of it and to be a part of their lives. What a special day that I will never forget.

26. Jimmy and Lj's wedding: This was the first wedding I have ever officiated by myself. What a memorable one. It doesn't get better than Laguna Beach. What a beautiful wedding...

27. Movies: There were some great movies that I watched this year. Blindside and Avatar stand out.

28. Friendships: Sometimes I really feel like the richest man in the world with wonderful friendships that have developed over the years.

29. Family: Did I say family again...I absolutely love my family and it's so wonderful to be able to spend time with them. Not just my family here in Nebraska, but my In-laws too:-) I have the best Father, Mother, Sister-in laws ever.

30. Samantha Johnson: You really are my proverbs 31 woman. I love you with all my heart. Thank you..

31. Jesus Christ: Thank you for your unconditional love for me. Without you I am truly nothing. Thank you for rescuing me, forgiving me of my Sin, dying a death that I deserved, and giving my life meaning, purpose, and joy.
